Storm Coming:

Sandwich Generation? Footlong Sub Sounds More Fitting!

Like it or not? Your GenX status is based upon your year of birth. Typically Generation X is made up of those born between 1965-1980. Often also referred to as the “middle child” generation because of its small size in comparison with the baby boomer and millennial generations.

Sandwiched GenX have a parent aged 65 or older and either young children or an adult child they’re helping. All of this has a financial impact.

BUT!…We’re The Coolest Generation.

We’ve lived through a remarkable period of change across various aspects of society, technology, culture, and economics. From the Atari, Commodore 64 to modern laptops and smartphones. We’ve seen emergence and proliferation of social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and more. Don’t forget MySpace!

We saw the rise of diverse music genres, including punk, grunge, hip-hop, and electronic dance music. We were part of the MTV Generation, which revolutionized music consumption with music videos. We saw the end of black and white TV, through to digital streaming services via hand-held TV’s. We mastered pong on the Atari, and saw the birth of reality games.
Gen X has faced several significant economic downturns, including the stock market crash of 1987, the dot-com bubble burst, and the Great Recession of 2008, impacting job security and financial stability. We’ve endured the transition from manufacturing-based economies to a service and information-based world, along with the rise of the gig economy, we’ve endured changed career paths and job stability.

We’ve Made It!

We’ve put our Mark on this Planet BUT There’s A STORM COMING!!

We’ve watched our parents and elderly acquaintances retire; we’ve been to the retirement celebrations. Freedom! No more work! Yippee!

For GenX? For You? For I? Retirement? It’s probably not an exciting possibility right now. Sadly, most of us don’t know (or want to know) just what retirement looks like until we get there.

Unfortunately, while we’ve been busy helping prepare the future we’ve been faced with financial pressures, most of them out of our control.

I’ve set out on a journey to help my fellow GenX achieve that Dream Retirement.

Not so long ago, I knew 2 Things:

One, I Was Broke as Hell.

and

Two, One Day I Wouldn’t Be…

Just How Bad Is It? Here are Some of the Top Challenges Yourself and GenX are Facing in Retirement

Inadequate Retirement Savings: Many Gen Xers have not saved enough to sustain their desired lifestyle in retirement. Factors contributing to this shortfall include stagnant wages, late starts in saving, and financial setbacks.

Will You Be Forced to Delay Retirement?

High Levels of Debt: Gen Xers often carry significant debt, including mortgages, credit card debt, and student loans (both their own and those of their children). This debt burden can severely limit their ability to save for retirement. High debt payments reduce disposable income available for savings and investments, potentially leading to financial insecurity in retirement. Paying off debt during retirement can also diminish the quality of life.

Rising Healthcare Costs: The cost of healthcare is a major concern for Gen Xers, with rising insurance premiums, out-of-pocket expenses, and potential long-term care costs posing significant financial risks. Unanticipated healthcare expenses can quickly deplete retirement savings.

Will Healthcare leave you vulnerable to financial hardship in later years?

Uncertainty Around Pensions/ Superannuation/Social Security: While Social Security is a critical component of retirement income for many, there is uncertainty about its long-term sustainability. Potential changes in benefits or eligibility rules add to this concern. Relying on Social Security without additional sources of income could lead to financial shortfalls.

Uncertainty about future benefits makes it difficult to plan accurately for retirement needs.

Don't Give Up YOUR Retirement Daydreams!

Meet Jim…

Fellow GenX Member. 53 years young. Divorced

College graduate with Degrees in business and management.

Professional. Hard working. Driven.

Like many of us, Jim had his fair share of the ‘winding, curvy, icy road’ of life.

Shortly after college, Jim shifted around from multiple dead-end jobs, working for bosses who didn’t value his time as much as he did. Changing careers, industries and even relocating far from what was “home” to find that “dream job”, but like most of us…Jim never found it.

Instead he endured long hours, being overlooked for advancement opportunties as the clock ticked into his 30’s.

Jim knew he wanted to do something bigger than where he was but he was stuck in that “rut”, the mousetrap as such…living week to week!

Bills! Bills! Bills! They just never go away!

From accumulating college debt, now using credit cards to buy groceries, pay electric and water bills, pay for car repairs, to keeping a roof over his head, Jim could just never get ahead let alone think about additional savings for retirement.

Jim decided he needed to control his income and his own destiny. He wanted to do his own thing without a boss telling him when he can and can’t take a break, a day off or even holidays.

As a friendly, charismatic, positive person, Jim was often targeted for “Get-Rich-Quick-Schemes”.  “Jim, you’ll be great at this! You’ll make millions!“. We’ve all heard these stories. Maybe you’re just like Jim?

Unfortunately, Jim was at wits end with his Insurance JOB at the time, and barely making ends meet, which left him vulnerable to the next Pie-In-The-Sky opportunity. Jim spoke with a lot of people daily, and during the next BAD DAY at work, along came the next BIG THING

Jim took the Bait! The Hook! The Entire Fishing Rod!

So, shortly after investing what little savings he had into a “breakthrough nutritional product” business, and quitting his job,  Jim’s wife fell pregnant with their first child.

Imagine the anxiety now! You know the feeling…all you want to do is raise your kids (even the unborn) in an amazing environment and give them every chance at an amazing life, What a mess!

BAD DECISION…?

Baby coming,

Barely enough income, no savings,

Out late 7 nights a week trying to build a business,

Debt still piling up,

Spends hardly any time with Very unhappy pregnant hormonal wife,

She wants to paint and decorate the Baby’s room,

and a garage full of vitamins!

All Jim wanted to do was live a normal life, work hard at a good job, raise a family, have a house in the suburbs, and take a holiday each year. Nothing fancy, nothing extravagant.

Where’s Jim These Days?

Fast forward 20+ years.

Jim has a 22 year old son attending college, still supporting him financially. At the same time Jim’s parents are in their late 70’s now and he spends time ensuring they’re looked after as well. Talk about “Sandwich generation”.

Financial stress took a toll on his marriage and ended in divorce.

Although Jim quit the “Vitamin” biz, he knew he had to do something to ensure he was going to retire well.

Here’s what Jim and many of GenX are facing!

The average retirement account balance for an individual Gen Xer is about $130,000usd. That number is too low for members of Gen X, who should have more saved for retirement by this point. But the even bigger problem is that the median account balance for an individual in Gen X is only $10,000usd, which means half of Gen Xers have less than that amount saved for retirement. However, 40% of Generation X has a zero dollar balance in their savings account. That’s right, many have absolutely nothing saved for retirement!

When I first discovered these startling facts, I was instantly sick to my stomach. How does one work so hard during their life and suddenly be? :

  • Working Through Retirement.
  • Unable to support themselves, let alone enjoy a quality standard of life.
  • Unable to afford healthcare.
  • Looking for government support or even family for basics.

This is a real issue! The Jims, and Jenny’s of the world are the first generation to be facing this problem, and it’s not looking to subside.

Is It Too Late For GenX? ABSOLUTELY NOT!
